Haircuts

Things are going along relatively smoothly.  Everything's growing.  Teri planted the peppers two weeks ago and they came up.  This coming week we are in charge of watering, so photos should be forthcoming.  Shawn checked on the beds we planted outside; either the radishes or lettuce germinated, but no sign of the peas.  The deer have been dedicated to breaking through the electric fence every night.  We may have to resort to peanut better on the wire.
The (almost) final batch of seeds was ordered last week and should be in tomorrow.  We're feeling late that we haven't planted the tomatoes or eggplant.  It's hard to figure out exactly how many to plant, but we should do it!

We were gone for four days and are shocked at the growth of the lettuce. 

The onions got their first haircuts last weekend. 

The onions all need haircuts again, and the artichokes would probably be happier in larger containers.

Early Spring?

Shawn managed to till up part of  the garden a couple of weeks ago.  Last weekend we would have planted peas, but were happily interrupted by non-farm life.  But today we did put in some radishes, peas, and Red Deer Tongue and other varieties of lettuce.  We'll see how they do; it may still be too cold. 
The artichokes, onions, and leeks are all still alive; pictures coming soon when I give the onions their first hair cut.  Two weeks ago we planted a bunch of basil which is happily living on the heat mat under the grow light.

The garlic is looking pretty good.

There's plenty of cleaning up yet to do.

Onions Sprouted!

The remaining onion seeds arrived Tuesday and were put in dirt that night.  Thursday morning I saw that the leeks had sprouted.  That night at least some of all the onions are hatched.  I turned on the light for them.  Now I'll have to remember to do that regularly and to water them.

The artichokes are starting to come up as of this morning.  You can see a light colored loop in the center cell on top.  The plant in the lower right hand cell is probably a weed.

Next step: figure out what seeds we have and what we need.  Then place an order.

It Has Begun

We've cleared the spot under the grow lights, plugged in the seedling mat, and filled containers with dirt. We've planted 12 artichokes (right), the Walla Walla Sweets (left), and the leeks. The yellow and red onion seeds haven't arrived yet, so they'll go in in a couple of days.
